What is the difference between gel fake nails and a gel manicure?
So i got my nails done today and asked for gel nails because I've heard some really great things about them! I love the way they look but i feel like i might have asked for the wrong thing? Are gel nails actually fake or just like thicker nail polish on the nail? I wanted them to be long because unfortunately, i used to be a nail biter and they became super short! So now I'm not sure what to do? On the website it says refills every 2 weeks but it just looks like i got an enhanced manicure and don't even need refills! I was originally going to get acrylics but i heard they were not healthy at all. The procedure only took like half an hour and all he seemed to do was a layer of gel nail polish&cure, painted on a french, and another layer of gel nail polish&cure. is this what gel nails are?..
No, what you recieved was a gel manicure. You should have asked for a full set of gel enhancments. But I warn you that on biters (even former ones), it generally turns out better if you ask for a full set of L&P acrylic enhancments in a sport length with a rounded tip. They are more rigid and with the shorter length and rounded tip, you are less likely to catch one and/or break them until you are used to having nails again. You can gradually let them grow and have them filed into a different shape as you get used to having nails again.
On another note, gel are no better for your nails than any other type of enhancment as they are all basically the same chemically. What makes the difference is you and the tech that you choose. Make sure you do your homework and find one that is QUALIFIED, REPUTABLE, LICENSED AND SKILLED!! Someone that does not overfile your natural nails, freely shares information on her education, licensing, santitation processes, product brands and other info. If they are not comfortable sharing and showing or if they hurt you in the least---please get up and walk out! Follow your techs advise on daily homecare and keep up your maintenance appointments and you will have the enhancements of your dreams.

Yep, it sounds like you got a Shellac or Gelac (or other brands) gel manicure, which is similar to just polishing your nails, except they have to be cured in a UV light and last for 2 week chip free.
Gel nails are where you get tips glued on or they are hand sculpted onto the free edge of your nail. If you did not get this, then you did in fact get a gel manicure.
