Default What's better gels or acrylics nails?

I want to get fake nails for my upcoming dance but i don't want to ruin my nails really badly. I have pretty strong nails and have never gotten these before. I don't plan on having them filled just going back to have one of the technicians take them off once they start to get ratty looking. My friends have gotten acrylics before and their nails still look pretty much intact, but my moms are disgusting now (shes had them for over 10 years though). I just want to know if I get them on only once will they damage my nails profoundly?

Acrylic nails turn your actual nails yellow. It's really nasty. I suggest gel nails. They are so much better.

I hope this helped!

If you get acrylic nails and remove them yourself then this can damage your nail, however if you have them taken off properly your nail still stays in pretty good condition.

I have found that gel is better for people who want to grow their nails or keep them strong so if you are only planning to do this once I suggest gel although they tend to be slightly more expensive.

me, personally, I prefer acrylics for my nails but there are so many different systems out there, and different brands of materials used that it would be impossible to say what was really best and it also depends on how good the technician is doing your nails. i'm a nail technician myself and i use the uv acrylic sytem as it's not damaging to the nail and the nail surface doesn't get filed before application of the acrylic. you could phone your chosen salon first and ask what system they use that doesn't require the nail surface to be filed before application. if you are going to remove them afterwards, do NOT bite them off or try to pull them or file them off as that will REALLY damage the nail. you could go back to the salon and get them removed, or for a cheaper option, buy a bottle of acetone (can buy in chemists quite cheaply) and soak each hand in a glass bowl of it for 15 minutes or so occasionaly rubbing the false nail with a cotton bud to help speed up the removal, and once they're off apply a small amount of olive oil to the nails to nourish them. hope this helps

I'm pretty sure that acrylics are better than gels, they last longer and i think they look better

IF you do your research and find a quality reputable tech/salon that knows what they are doing--then no it will not harm your natural nails no matter how long you leave them on.
L&P (acrylic) and Gel are basically chemically the same and if applied correctly they look the same and neither is "better" or "worse" for your natural nails--it is the tech that makes the difference.
In your particular situation, however, I would suggest calling around and see who can offer you "holiday" or "weekend" nails. Something that is MEANT to be very temporary and removed easily. Gel is not removed easily--IT MUST BE FILED/BUFFED OFF BY A PROFESSIONAL TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE NATURAL NAIL AND CAN NOT BE SOAKED OFF WITH ANY SOLVENT.
When you are done with them, you can come back here and look under the "tutorial" section to find complete instructions on how to properly and safely remove your enhancments and give yourself a rehydrating manicure.
