What is that thing called when there is this powder and some liquid that they put on the nail to get thicker and it makes the fake nail blend with the real nail? They have this brush and they dip it in the liquid and then in the powder and it makes the nail harder I think?

You are wanting "sculpted L&P". And if you do your homework and choose a reputable, qualified tech--there will be no harm to your natural nails and they will look like natural, beautiful nails. You do have to realize that there is upkeep involved in having enhancements though. You need to take care of them nightly on your own and have "fills" bi-weekly or so--depending on your natural nail growth. They are a committment.
Powder + liquid = acrylic
Gel + UV lamp = gel
These are nearly the same materials, both of them durable and only professional nail technicians can handle them and use them properly - so your nails will lok nice shaped, decorated, colorful etc.
Both gel and acrylic needs preparation before the application - this means that the technician will apply some liquids to your nails to avoid fungus and baceterial infections.
Acrylic or gel nails are not bed for your nails, as the technician only file the natural nail surface to loose it's shine. Only the nail technician can ruin your nail.
Check Claudia's posts as she posted useful info about the salons - what you need to ask, in what cases you must leave the place etc! You should read these as they can help to choose the right salon!
