The best way to get the "flare" nail (Lord only knows why...)is to use a form and sculpt. It can be done with a tip though. If you use a tip that is a couple sizes too large for the nail you are putting it on and just trim it up at an angle from the very end to where it would connect to the natural nail and then file to refine.
